My name is Gary Welch and I am the founder of CalGreen Energy Services and a specialist in the CalGreen Code.
I have spent over 35 years engineering sustainable buildings in California and throughout the world. These included the 5th tallest building in the world in Xiamen China, San Francisco International Airport Central Terminal and multiple projects for Walt Disney World, Hilton Hotels, and Kaiser Hospitals. I have provided sustainable design services to dozens of residential projects throughout California.
Later in my career I moved to Sonoma County and became a principal for a consulting engineering firm. When the CalGreen Code first took effect in 2009 it was it was the first state building code to mandate sustainable design. I was enthused about the impact this would have on the buildings I was designing.
I have now assisted in more than four hundred CalGreen permit submissions including commercial buildings, residences, additions and Accessory Dwelling Units.
The California Green Building Standards Code format, and intent, varies greatly from the other California building codes. This makes it challenging for those who are not specifically trained in this non-standard building code.
It seemed to me the industry needed a specialist in the CalGreen Code. It needed a firm whose entire focus was CalGreen. Architects, contractors and even building departments needed the resources of a professional CalGreen firm. After considering this for some time, I left the consulting engineering firm and founded CalGreen Energy Services.
CalGreen compliance touches every facet of the construction industry. It takes a professional with an extensive experience to manage the CalGreen process. I believe my broad-based background in building design and construction provided the foundation for this role.
If you have a CalGreen code question feel free to call or email me. I am always happy to share my knowledge on the California Green Building Standards Code!
