Sonoma County CalGreen Services

Sonoma County CalGreen Services

We have been providing Sonoma County CalGreen services for over a decade. These services include residential and commercial CalGreen checklists, inspections, and commissioning.

We can turn-around you residential permit plans in two days. For commercial work it may take a third business day. Our fees are extremely competitive as well. Yet, these two reasons are not the primary reasons you should consider engaging us for your project.

The value that we bring to your project is our specialized and extensive knowledge on the CalGreen code and how it is interpreted by the county building department. We have over forty years experience in the construction industry and have been intimately involved with the CalGreen Code compliance since it’s inception in 2009. We are ICC Certified CalGreen Special Inspectors and Plans Examiners. This detailed knowledge of the code, and it’s application, can help ensure your project does not commit to more work than is actually required. Where grey areas arise, we can negotiate these items with the building department for you.

CalGreen and “Permit Sonoma”

It is an unfortunate fact that there are many jurisdictions in the state that make very little effort to enforce California’s Green Building Standards Code. The Sonoma County Building Department (PRMD) is not one of those jurisdictions. In fact, their enforcement of the code is the most stringent in the state. And we do not make that statement lightly.

For residents, ensuring sustainable building practices is an extension of the environmentally conscious nature of Sonoma County. Sustainable buildings minimize water and energy usage and provide healthier interior environments.

For new projects, however, the enforcement of the CalGreen code can be painful for those who do not clearly address the code requirements in their permit plans. Yet the code goes beyond just the initial permit requirements. It also sets many specific requirements on the contractor for sustainable practices and documentation that must be made available at the end of the project. Your design team needs to ensure the contractor’s obligations during construction are clearly laid out in the permit plans.

The county requires the use of a listed an ICC certified CalGreen Special Inspector to both review your project prior to permit submittal and perform inspections. And here is where the county’s diligence can create another expensive lesson for the unwary homeowner, builder, or architect.

Unlike every other jurisdiction, Sonoma County Inspection Department requires not one, but two, CalGreen inspections, at a minimum. This requirement is not noted on the PRMD website, nor is it formally stated anywhere else on the county website. However, the county requires a CalGreen “interim” inspection and report once the insulation goes up, but before the sheetrock is installed. Those projects that get to the end and have not had the required interim inspection can expect repercussions from the inspection division.

When you receive our proposal it will include the checklist fee, the interim inspection and the final inspection, broken out separately.

Sonoma County CalGreen Checklist

The Misleading Sonoma County Cal Green Checklist

At CalGreen Energy Services we have been involved in the design and construction industry for many decades. We understand the intent behind the CalGreen

requirements. As a result, we are able to critically review your project and understand where some the requirements don’t apply. When submitting for permit we clearly state for the permit reviewers why they are not applicable for your project.

Please note that the Permit Sonoma CalGreen Checklist has every box on the checklist already checked. This implies that you must meet every single requirement on the checklist.

This is NOT what the code requires and you should not blindly submit your project with every box checked. This is yet another reason why you need someone very knowledgeable in CalGreen to help you with your permit submittal.

There are company’s out there who will take your money and submit this checklists without properly un-checking the boxes that you are note required to comply with. Once you submit the checklist you are financially obligated to pay for every item on there once the permit is approved!
